Product Description
Mechanism of action
Carboprost methyl is a methyl ester derivative of carboprost (15-methyl-PGF₂α), a prostaglandin F₂α analogue. It binds FP prostanoid receptors on uterine smooth muscle, activating phospholipase C, increasing IP₃ and intracellular calcium and inducing strong uterine contractions. It also promotes vasoconstriction in uterine vasculature and modulates bronchial and GI smooth muscle tone.
Benefits and advantages
Used in obstetric pharmacology, prostaglandin-receptor signalling studies, uterine-contractility modelling, postpartum-haemorrhage mechanism research and prostanoid SAR analysis. Its potency and receptor selectivity make it invaluable for uterotonic-pathway experiments.
Side effects and risks
Risks include bronchospasm, hypertension or hypotension, GI cramping, diarrhoea, fever and, in clinical contexts, uterine rupture in susceptible individuals. Handle as a potent prostaglandin analogue with appropriate ventilation and PPE.
