Mechanism of action
Carbetapentane is a centrally acting non-opioid antitussive agent. It suppresses the cough reflex by modulating neuronal excitability in the medullary cough centre and altering transmission in vagal afferent pathways. Unlike opioids, it has no significant activity at μ-opioid receptors and only mild sedative properties at therapeutic levels.

Used in respiratory neurophysiology to investigate central cough-control mechanisms, non-opioid antitussive pathways, vagal-afferent modulation and comparative cough-suppression pharmacology. It serves as a reference compound for evaluating new centrally acting antitussives with reduced sedation and dependence potential.
Side effects and risks
Risks include mild dizziness, headache, gastrointestinal discomfort and, at higher doses, CNS excitation or sedation. Handle as a CNS-active compound and avoid excessive inhalation or ingestion of powdered material.
