Mechanism of action
Camostat mesylate is a serine-protease inhibitor that targets trypsin-like enzymes including TMPRSS2. By inhibiting proteolytic cleavage of viral envelope proteins, it blocks viral entry into host cells. It also suppresses pancreatic proteases, reducing inflammation and autodigestion.
Benefits and advantages
Used extensively in antiviral-entry research (e.g., coronaviruses), TMPRSS2-pathway studies, pancreatitis modelling, epithelial barrier-function research and protease-inhibitor SAR investigations. A key reference molecule for host-targeted antiviral mechanisms.
Side effects and risks
Risks include GI discomfort, rash, hypersensitivity, hepatic enzyme elevation and potential interactions with other protease pathways. Handle as a serine-protease–modulating compound.
