Mechanism of action
Buthiazide is a thiazide diuretic that blocks the Na⁺/Cl⁻ symporter (NCC) in the distal convoluted tubule, increasing sodium, chloride and water excretion. It reduces plasma volume and peripheral vascular resistance while also decreasing urinary calcium loss. Pharmacologically similar to other thiazides, buthiazide offers distinct kinetic properties relevant to dosage modelling.

Side effects and risks
