Product Description
Mechanism of action
Bethanechol is a cholinergic agonist acting selectively on muscarinic M₃ receptors in smooth muscle. It stimulates parasympathetic activity by mimicking acetylcholine, promoting contraction of the detrusor muscle, increasing GI motility and enhancing secretory responses. It does not cross the blood–brain barrier and is resistant to acetylcholinesterase degradation.

Used in autonomic‑nervous‑system research, muscarinic‑receptor pharmacology, GI‑motility models, bladder‑function studies and smooth‑muscle signalling analysis. A key reference compound for selective muscarinic activation.
Side effects and risks
Risks include abdominal cramps, salivation, sweating, bronchoconstriction, bradycardia and hypotension. Handle under parasympathomimetic compound safety protocols.
