Product Description

Mechanism of action

Betaxolol is a highly selective β₁‑adrenergic receptor antagonist that reduces cardiac output by decreasing heart rate, contractility and renin release. Its β₁ selectivity minimises bronchoconstrictive effects compared with non‑selective beta‑blockers. Betaxolol also exhibits mild membrane‑stabilising activity and calcium‑channel–modulating effects, which contribute to reduced intraocular pressure when used in ocular formulations.

Benefits and advantages

Widely used in cardiovascular research, β₁‑receptor selectivity studies, intraocular‑pressure pharmacology, glaucoma models, renin–angiotensin regulation experiments and electrophysiological mapping of adrenergic signalling. A standard comparator for next‑generation cardioselective β‑blockers.

Side effects and risks

Risks include bradycardia, hypotension, fatigue, conduction abnormalities and rare bronchospasm. Handle with cardiovascular‑active compound precautions.
