Product Description
Mechanism of action
Betahistine is a histamine analogue acting as an H₁ receptor agonist and H₃ autoreceptor antagonist. Activation of H₁ receptors improves vestibular microcirculation via vasodilation, while H₃ antagonism increases histamine turnover and neurotransmitter release in the vestibular nuclei. These combined actions modulate vestibular compensation and reduce vertigo symptoms.
Benefits and advantages
Used in vestibular research, neuro-otology, central histaminergic signalling studies, microcirculation modelling and comparative H₁/H₃ ligand analysis. Often employed in studies on Menière’s disease mechanisms and compensation pathways.
Side effects and risks
Risks include headache, flushing, mild hypotension and rare gastric irritation. Handle with caution due to CNS-active histamine analogues.
