Mechanism of action
Benthiazide is a thiazide diuretic that inhibits the Na⁺/Cl⁻ transporter (NCC) in the distal convoluted tubule, promoting natriuresis and diuresis. It also decreases calcium excretion and reduces peripheral vascular resistance with chronic use.

Used in renal electrolyte research, NCC-transporter modelling, antihypertensive studies, thiazide comparative pharmacology and calcium-handling investigations. Provides insights into nephron-segment specificity.
Side effects and risks
Risks include electrolyte imbalance, hyperuricaemia, photosensitivity, hypotension and metabolic changes. Handle with thiazide-active safety precautions.
