Penicillin benzathine is a long-acting depot form of penicillin G that slowly releases active drug from the injection site, inhibiting bacterial cell-wall synthesis in susceptible gram-positive organisms. It is used for syphilis, rheumatic fever prophylaxis, and certain streptococcal infections. Side effects include injection-site pain, rash, urticaria, anaphylaxis in allergic patients, and, rarely, neurovascular complications if inadvertently injected intravascularly.
