Mechanism of Action
Erdosteine is a thiol‑releasing mucolytic prodrug. After hepatic metabolism, it generates free sulfhydryl groups that disrupt disulfide bonds in mucin glycoproteins, lowering sputum viscosity. It also exhibits antioxidant activity by scavenging reactive oxygen species and modulating inflammatory mediators in the respiratory tract.

Used in airway‑mucus viscosity studies, antioxidant‑in‑lung research, COPD and bronchitis modelling, and thiol‑prodrug activation assays.
Side Effects and Risks
Risks include nausea, dyspepsia, rare skin eruptions and transient increases in liver enzymes. Handle with thiol‑containing mucolytic precautions.
