Mechanism of Action
Enalapril maleate is a prodrug converted to enalaprilat, a potent ACE (angiotensinconverting enzyme) inhibitor. It blocks conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, reducing vasoconstriction, aldosterone secretion and blood pressure. It also increases bradykinin levels through reduced degradation.

Side Effects and Risks
Risks include cough, hypotension, hyperkalemia, angioedema and renal impairment. Handle with ACEinhibitor precautions.
