Mechanism of Action
Clonidine hydrochloride is an α2‑adrenergic receptor agonist that reduces sympathetic outflow from the CNS. It suppresses norepinephrine release, lowers peripheral vascular resistance and modulates pain transmission through spinal α2 receptors. It also influences imidazoline receptor pathways.
Benefits and Advantages
Used in hypertension‑pathway modelling, sympathetic‑tone research, neuropathic‑pain studies, α2‑agonist receptor analyses and withdrawal‑syndrome investigations.
Side Effects and Risks
Risks include hypotension, bradycardia, sedation, rebound hypertension on withdrawal and dry mouth. Handle as a potent α2‑agonist.
