Mechanism of Action
Chlortetracycline hydrochloride is a tetracycline-class antibiotic that inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, preventing aminoacyl-tRNA attachment to the A-site. This blocks elongation of the polypeptide chain, halting bacterial growth. It is active against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as intracellular pathogens.

Side Effects and Risks
Risks include photosensitivity, GI upset, hepatotoxicity, enamel discoloration in developing teeth, superinfection with resistant organisms and interactions with divalent cations. Handle with antimicrobial and photosensitive-compound precautions.
