Product Description
Mechanism of Action
Chlorpromazine hydrochloride is a phenothiazine antipsychotic and dopamine D₂ receptor antagonist. It also blocks H₁ histamine receptors, α₁-adrenergic receptors, muscarinic receptors and serotonin receptors, producing broad CNS effects. D₂ antagonism in the mesolimbic pathway reduces psychotic symptoms, while widespread receptor blockade contributes to sedation, hypotension and anticholinergic effects.
Benefits and Advantages
Used in dopamine-pathway research, schizophrenia-modelling studies, antiemetic mechanism studies, behavioural pharmacology, receptor-binding investigations and neuroleptic SAR research. Also valuable in exploring multi-receptor CNS drug interactions.
Side Effects and Risks
Risks include extrapyramidal symptoms, tardive dyskinesia, sedation, hypotension, anticholinergic effects, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, hyperprolactinemia and QT prolongation. Handle with CNS-active neuroleptic precautions.
