Mechanism of Action
Cefalexin is a widely used first-generation cephalosporin that inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis by binding PBPs and blocking peptidoglycan crosslinking. It is highly effective against gram-positive cocci and some gram-negative species.
Benefits and Advantages
Used in bacteriology research, β-lactam-resistance pathway studies, cell-wall biosynthesis modelling, MIC profiling, biofilm inhibition testing and cephalosporin SAR research.
Side Effects and Risks
Risks include allergic reactions, GI upset, Clostridioides overgrowth, elevated liver enzymes and rare interstitial nephritis. Handle with routine antimicrobial precautions.
