Mechanism of action
Candesartan cilexetil is a prodrug converted to candesartan, an angiotensin II type 1 (AT₁) receptor antagonist. It blocks vasoconstriction, aldosterone secretion, sodium retention and sympathetic activation mediated by AT₁ signalling. The cilexetil form enhances oral bioavailability.

Used in cardiovascular research, renin–angiotensin system (RAS) modelling, hypertension studies, vascular-remodelling research, AT₁-receptor pharmacology and heart-failure pathway analysis.
Side effects and risks
Risks include hypotension, hyperkalaemia, renal impairment and dizziness. Handle under antihypertensive-agent safety guidelines.
