Mechanism of action
Calcium dobesilate is a vascular-protective agent that stabilises capillary endothelium, reduces capillary hyperpermeability, and inhibits oxidative stress in microvascular tissues. Mechanistically, it suppresses abnormal basement membrane thickening, inhibits platelet aggregation, and reduces blood viscosity. It also decreases levels of VEGF and improves endothelial nitric oxide signalling, enhancing microcirculatory function.
Benefits and advantages
Used in diabetic microangiopathy research, retinal microvascular studies, endothelial-permeability modelling, oxidative-stress investigations, haemorrheology research and chronic venous insufficiency modelling. Its multi-target vascular effects make it ideal for microcirculation pathophysiology studies.
Side effects and risks
Risks include GI upset, skin rash, rare agranulocytosis, hypersensitivity and mild hepatobiliary disturbances. Handle as a vascular-active research compound.
