Mechanism of action
Butethamate is a central cough suppressant acting via non-opioid pathways in the medullary cough centre. It reduces cough reflex sensitivity without depressing respiration. Its mechanism includes modulation of central sensory integration and mild anticholinergic activity.

Used in cough-suppression studies, central-respiratory control research, non-opioid antitussive modelling, vagus-mediated reflex investigations and pharmacodynamic comparison with opioid antitussives.
Side effects and risks
Risks include mild sedation, dizziness, dry mouth and GI upset. Handle with CNS-active safety protocols.
