Mechanism of action
Butacaine is an ester-type local anaesthetic that inhibits voltage-gated sodium channels in peripheral sensory neurons, preventing depolarisation and conduction of pain signals. Hydrolysis by plasma esterases limits its systemic duration of effect. It exhibits moderate lipid solubility, allowing effective penetration into nerve membranes.

Side effects and risks
Risks include CNS excitation or depression, allergic reactions, cardiovascular instability and local irritation. Handle as a potent sodium-channel–blocking compound.
