Mechanism of action
Buspirone is an anxiolytic agent that acts as a partial agonist at serotonin 5‑HT₁A receptors, reducing presynaptic serotonin release and modulating downstream serotonergic tone. It also exhibits mild dopamine D₂ receptor affinity without producing sedation, dependence or major psychomotor impairment. The anxiolytic effect arises from modulation of limbic-system signalling rather than GABAergic pathways targeted by benzodiazepines.

Used in anxiety-pathway research, serotonin-autoreceptor studies, limbic neurocircuit modelling, dopaminergic–serotonergic interaction research and behavioural-pharmacology investigations. A key reference drug distinguishing non-sedative anxiolysis from GABA-mediated sedation.

Risks include dizziness, nausea, headache, restlessness, mild tachycardia and rare serotonin-related interactions. Handle as a CNS-active serotonergic compound.
