Mechanism of action
Bupivacaine is a long-acting amide-type local anaesthetic that blocks voltage-gated sodium channels in sensory and motor neurons, preventing action-potential propagation. It has high lipid solubility and strong receptor affinity, producing profound and prolonged nerve blockade.

Side effects and risks
Risks include cardiotoxicity (arrhythmias, conduction block), CNS toxicity (seizures), respiratory depression and local tissue irritation. Handle with extreme care as a potent local anaesthetic.
