Mechanism of action
Bexarotene is a selective retinoid X receptor (RXR) agonist. RXR activation affects transcription of genes governing cell differentiation, lipid metabolism, apoptosis and immune modulation. Bexarotene induces tumourcell apoptosis and modulates retinoidresponsive pathways across multiple tissues.

Used in oncology research, nuclearreceptor biology, lipidmetabolism modelling, geneexpression regulation studies, cutaneous Tcell lymphoma research and RXRRAR signalling investigations.
Side effects and risks
Risks include hyperlipidaemia, hypothyroidism (via suppression of TSH), hepatotoxicity, leukopenia and teratogenicity. Handle with cytotoxic and endocrineactive compound containment.
