Mechanism of action
Bevonium is a quaternary ammonium anticholinergic agent that antagonises muscarinic receptors, reducing GI motility, secretions and smooth‑muscle spasm. Due to its quaternary structure, it has poor CNS penetration and primarily exhibits peripheral effects.
Benefits and advantages
Used in autonomic‑pharmacology studies, GI‑motility modelling, smooth‑muscle contraction assays, peripheral muscarinic‑receptor mapping and development of antispasmodics with limited CNS activity.
Side effects and risks
Risks include dry mouth, urinary retention, tachycardia, blurred vision and constipation. Handle with peripheral antimuscarinic safety protocols.
