Mechanism of action

Betoxycaine is an ester‑type local anaesthetic that inhibits voltage‑gated sodium channels in peripheral nerves, preventing action potential initiation and propagation. Similar to other ester anaesthetics, it is hydrolysed by plasma esterases, resulting in a shorter duration of action.

Benefits and advantages

Used in sodium‑channel electrophysiology, local‑anaesthetic SAR research, nerve‑conduction studies, corneal‑sensation models and comparative ester‑vs‑amide anaesthetic investigations.

Side effects and risks

Risks include CNS excitation, cardiovascular depression, allergic reactions and local irritation. Handle with local‑anaesthetic exposure precautions.
