Mechanism of action
Benserazid is a peripheral aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase (AADC) inhibitor that prevents conversion of levodopa to dopamine outside the CNS. By inhibiting peripheral metabolism, it enhances levodopa bioavailability and increases CNS delivery while reducing peripheral dopaminergic side effects.
Benefits and advantages
Benserazid is crucial in Parkinson’s-disease research, dopaminergic metabolism studies, pharmacokinetic modelling of levodopa therapy and peripheral vs central enzyme-inhibition experiments. Also pivotal for transporter and BBB-penetration studies.
Side effects and risks
Risks include nausea, orthostatic hypotension, mood changes, dyskinesia (via levodopa interaction) and rare hepatic or hematologic disturbances. Handle with enzymatic-inhibitor precautions.
