Product Description

Mechanism of action

Acetarsol is an aromatic arsenical compound with antiprotozoal and antifungal properties. It is thought to interfere with parasitic enzymes containing sulfhydryl groups, leading to inhibition of essential metabolic pathways and cell death. Historically it has been used in topical or suppository formulations for amoebiasis and certain mucosal infections.

Benefits and advantages

In selected indications, acetarsol can offer targeted treatment where resistance or intolerance to other agents limits options. Its local application allows high concentrations at the site of infection with relatively low systemic exposure when correctly formulated.

Side effects and risks

Because it contains arsenic, systemic absorption carries a risk of arsenic‑related toxicity, including neurotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, haematological changes and dermatological effects. Use has largely been replaced by safer alternatives in many regions. Any handling or formulation of acetarsol must therefore adhere to strict hazardous‑substance protocols, with appropriate protective equipment and waste management.
